Ongoing Projects

Kehilla operates and manages two non-profit buildings, the Avenel and Project MARC. In addition, Kehilla provides property management services to Plaut Manor, which is sponsored and run by a separate Board. Elm Ridge Senior's Residence, Habayit Shelanu and 2 Neptune Drive are buildings that Kehilla developed in partnership with other agencies.

Project MARC

Mutually Assisting Residential Community (Project Marc): Opened in 1985, this 90 unit project was the first community project sponsored by Kehilla under the Federal 56.1 Program. It is home to seniors, families and the physically challenged.

The concept of "Mutual Assistance" stems from a tradition of multi-generational family units providing strong internal support and offering a caring neighbourhood. As testament to the concept’s strength, in 1987 MARC was the recipient of the William J. Schroder Award for innovation from the North American Council of Jewish Federations.

    The Avenel

The Avenel was completed in 1992, and is the third non-profit housing project to be sponsored by the Kehilla Residential Programme. The eight-story building was developed under the Federal/Provincial '91 programme, and modelled after a traditional community framework to create a balanced mix of income levels, age groups and family structures. The result of this design innovation is a more harmonized and supportive environment. The Avenel is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors, under the auspices of Kehilla.

The Avenel has 111 one, two and three-bedroom units, with a high proportion designed for the elderly. Eighteen units are customized for physically-challenged tenants; a number of the units are head-leased to Jewish agency clients. Ground floor amenities at The Avenel include a children's activity room with an adjacent outdoor play area, a seniors' lounge, and a multi-purpose recreation room. A landscaped roof terrace provides outdoor space, and laundry facilities are located on the second floor. The building is centrally situated in close proximity to public transportation, Highway 401, synagogues, schools and shopping.
